How to make your local business appear in ChatGPT and Perplexity answers

AptexAI Team

Getting a local business cited in ChatGPT and Perplexity is not magic. It follows patterns you can identify and work on deliberately. Here is what actually moves it, drawn from what we see across 45 local service categories.

1. Fix your schema markup first

Schema markup is structured data on your site that tells an AI tool, and Google, exactly what your business is. Most local businesses either have none at all or have generic LocalBusiness markup that says almost nothing specific.

The type matters. A dental practice should use Dentist. An HVAC company should use HVACBusiness. A law firm should use LegalService or Attorney, with the areas of law it handles spelled out in the page content rather than left implied. That specificity is what lets a tool cite you for a specific local question with any confidence.

At minimum your markup should carry the business name, address, phone number, opening hours, service area, and the services you offer. Every one of those is a field an assistant uses when it assembles a local recommendation.

2. Build question-and-answer content for every service

AI tools are answer engines. They are built to find content that addresses a question directly, and question-and-answer content — a real question, followed by a direct, factual answer — is the format they draw on most readily.

For a plumbing company that means answering what a water heater replacement costs, what to do when a pipe bursts, and how to check that a plumber is licensed. For a family law practice it means explaining how the divorce process runs and how custody decisions are actually made.

They need to be real answers, not marketing copy dressed as questions. Assistants handle the difference better than you would expect, and so do the people reading.

3. Show your expertise, specifically

Google’s quality guidelines describe experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness as the markers of credible content. Assistants broadly favour the same things, because the same signals make a source safe to quote.

For a local business that means credentials and registrations shown prominently, years of experience stated as a number, professional memberships named, reviews visible, and content that demonstrates actual knowledge rather than repeating what every competitor says.

A dental practice that lists each dentist’s training, qualification year, and particular areas of work will consistently outperform one that says its team has years of experience and leaves it there.

4. Write genuinely local content

AI tools use geographic signals to match a business to a location-specific question. Best HVAC company in one city returns a different answer than the same question about the next city over, and the businesses named in each need content that shows real local relevance rather than a place name dropped into generic copy.

What works: the neighbourhoods you actually cover, local rules or conditions that affect your work, jobs you have done nearby, and service-area pages that explain your coverage honestly, including travel times.

5. Be consistent everywhere

Assistants pull from several places at once — your site, your Google Business Profile, review platforms, industry directories, local press. When your name, address, phone number, and description match across all of them, a tool can cite you confidently. When they conflict, that uncertainty is usually resolved in favour of a competitor with cleaner data.

How long does it take?

With the work done properly, most local businesses start showing up in AI answers within about 60 to 90 days. The ones that move fastest address all five areas together rather than one at a time, which is why all five are part of the standard monthly programme rather than an add-on.

The sensible first step is finding out where you stand. Our free audit includes an AI visibility check across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, so you can see what those tools currently say about your business — or whether they mention it at all.
