Local SEO vs AI visibility: what is the difference, and do you need both?
When an owner hears the phrase AI visibility for the first time, the usual response is: is that not just SEO?
The short answer is no — but the two are closely related, and the work that builds one usually helps the other. Here is how to think about both.
What local SEO does
Local SEO is the set of work that helps your business appear when someone searches for a service in your area. It covers three things.
Google Business Profile — the map listing that shows up for plumber near me or dentist in your town. For most local businesses it is the single highest-return thing to fix.
Organic rankings — where your site sits in the ordinary listings below the map. Ranking on the first page for your main services is what produces steady, compounding enquiries.
Technical foundation — speed, mobile layout, crawlability, correct indexing. None of the above works properly without it, which is why it is table stakes rather than a differentiator.
What AI visibility does
AI visibility is how prominently your business appears when an assistant answers a question relevant to your services. In practice that means three places.
Google AI Overviews — the generated summary above the ordinary results, which draws on different signals than the listings beneath it.
Perplexity — increasingly used for local service research, particularly by people who read carefully before they buy.
ChatGPT — used for local recommendations far more than most owners expect, especially for best-in-area questions and who-should-I-call-about-this questions.
The key difference
Traditional SEO puts your website in front of someone who then decides whether to click. AI visibility means the assistant recommends your business directly, often without the person visiting any website at all. The assistant becomes the intermediary, and a business it cannot see effectively does not exist in that conversation.
You can rank first on Google and be entirely absent from those recommendations. Related, but not the same thing.
Do you need both?
Yes, though the balance depends on where your customers actually search. For most local service businesses today, ordinary local SEO — the Google Business Profile above all — still produces the majority of enquiries. AI visibility is the part growing fastest, and in several categories it is heading towards being the first place anyone asks.
The businesses doing well are building both at once, which is easier than it sounds because the work overlaps. Good schema helps rankings and citation. Question-led content helps organic traffic and AI answers. Genuine evidence of expertise helps both.
Which is why both are in every plan rather than sold separately.
