What AI visibility is — and why local businesses need to care

AptexAI Team

If someone in your city asked ChatGPT for the best dentist near them, or the top HVAC company in their area, right now — would your business come up?

For most local service businesses the answer is no. And it is a problem that gets more expensive to ignore every month.

What is AI visibility?

AI visibility is how prominently your business appears when AI tools — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot — answer questions relevant to what you do.

These tools do not show ten blue links and let the person decide. They give a direct answer, and they often name specific businesses. If your site is not structured to be read and quoted, you will not be named. If you are not named, that customer goes to whoever was.

How is this different from ordinary SEO?

Traditional SEO gets you ranking in Google’s organic results — the list of links below the ads and the map pack. That still matters enormously. AI visibility is a separate layer sitting on top of it.

When AI Overviews appear at the top of a results page, which they now do for a great many local queries, they draw on a different set of signals than the organic listing below them. A business can rank first organically and still be absent from the summary above it.

Perplexity and ChatGPT are further removed again. They combine what their models already hold with live web data, and they lean on schema markup, clearly structured content, and evidence of genuine expertise when deciding which business to put forward.

Why does this matter for local service businesses in particular?

Local services are exactly the category people ask AI about. Best plumber near me. Top-rated injury attorney in the city. A dentist who takes a particular insurance plan. These are high-intent questions from someone ready to act — and an assistant is increasingly the first place they ask.

The businesses that appear in those answers get the call. The ones that do not, do not.

What makes a business appear in AI answers?

Several things influence whether a local business gets cited.

Schema markup — structured data telling AI tools exactly what kind of business you are, what you offer, where you are, and what your credentials are. Most local business sites have none, or have the wrong type.

Question-and-answer content — AI tools pull heavily from content that answers a question directly, because it is the easiest thing to quote. A dental practice with a properly structured section on clear aligners is far likelier to be named when someone asks about aligner providers nearby.

Evidence of expertise — real names, real credentials, real experience, and specifics rather than claims. Google’s quality guidelines describe these as experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness, and assistants broadly favour the same things for the same reasons.

Local relevance — specific geographic detail, service-area content, and work you have actually done nearby. It is what lets a tool connect your business to a location-specific question with any confidence.

How do you measure it?

There is no Search Console for AI visibility yet. We measure it by running structured queries across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews for the searches that matter to your business, then tracking whether you appear and how prominently.

We call that an AI Visibility Score and check it monthly for every client. Most local businesses start at zero. With the schema, content, and consistency work in place, most see the score move inside the first quarter.

What should you do now?

The window is still open, and it will not stay open. As more businesses and agencies work out what is happening, AI citation will get as contested as ordinary search already is, and early authority is hard for later arrivals to displace.
